Implementation Sciences Laboratory

The Implementation Sciences Laboratory (ISL) focuses on sociotechnical aspects of biomedical engineering projects on a continuum from observation to intervention. The observation activities involve IRB-approved research studies about technology adoption, work processes and practices, and innovative approaches to complex informatics implementation problems. Intervention activities involve actively facilitating, participating in, or leading informatics-related change efforts within Vanderbilt University Medical Center and beyond. Current projects include operations projects focusing on communication tool use and impacts of implementing Meaningful Use mandates, use of health information technology to manage health during environmental disruptions, evaluations of clinical systems, and pre-design studies of workflow and information flow in chronic disease care. The group specializes in qualitative and mixed methods research designs.
