The Spine Care Quality and Outcomes Lab aims to improve the mental and physical health of patients undergoing surgical and procedural management of spinal disease. Researchers and clinicians in the lab identify patient, clinical and surgical factors that influence hospital-based morbidity in an effort to improve patient safety and maximize the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of current treatment paradigms. We achieve these aims by:
- Utilizing a prospective patient registry to collect baseline and follow-up morbidity data on a wide range of spinal conditions
- Obtaining long-term patient-reported outcomes to evaluate the comparative effectiveness and cost-utility of management strategies
- Developing and validating risk prediction models to identify patients with spinal disease who are at risk for poor outcomes
- Conducting randomized controlled trials to assess innovative treatments to improve patient-centered outcomes and reduce opioid utilization
